Can AI tell which parent a child looks like more?

AI can compare the visible appearance of a child's photo with photos of each parent and report which comparison is numerically closer. That can be entertaining, but the result needs careful interpretation.

How a mom-vs-dad comparison is produced

The child image is analyzed against the mother's image and then against the father's image. Each pair receives a visual similarity estimate. Comparing those estimates shows which uploaded parent photo appears closer to the child's uploaded photo.

It compares photos, not genetics

The model does not read DNA and cannot determine biological parentage. It only evaluates visible patterns in the photographs. A higher score with one parent means that particular pair of images looked more similar to the model.

Small score differences should not be overinterpreted

If the two results are close, for example only a few points apart, it is more useful to describe the result as broadly similar than to declare a decisive winner. Different photos can easily change a small gap.

Try comparable photos

For a fairer comparison, use clear images with similar head angles, lighting and image quality. An excellent photo of one parent and a blurry side-profile of the other can make the comparison less meaningful.

Children can resemble different parents at different ages

Family resemblance evolves. A child's face changes as it grows, so a playful result today may differ when older photos or future photos are used. That variability is part of what makes family resemblance interesting.
