How to test a face comparison tool properly
If you want to judge whether a face-comparison result is useful, do more than run one pair of photos. A simple repeatable test can reveal how sensitive the tool is to photo quality and image choice.
Step 1: define what you are testing
Decide whether you are testing repeatability, sensitivity to lighting, sensitivity to angle, or a family resemblance comparison. Changing several variables at once makes the result harder to understand.
Step 2: choose a clean baseline
Start with clear, near-frontal portraits. Avoid heavy filters, sunglasses and extreme expressions. Record or remember the initial result so you can compare later runs.
Step 3: repeat with another good photo
Replace one image with another high-quality photo of the same person. If the score remains close, that pair appears relatively stable across those two images. If it moves substantially, photo choice is important.
Step 4: deliberately test one difficult condition
Try a side angle, poorer lighting or a larger age gap — one at a time. This helps reveal which conditions make the comparison less stable.
Step 5: avoid chasing a preferred score
Do not keep replacing photos until the tool produces the answer you wanted. That turns the test into selection bias. A more useful approach is to decide the photo criteria before seeing the result.
Step 6: interpret differences proportionally
A very small difference between two family comparisons should not be treated like a decisive result. The smaller the gap, the easier it may be for another reasonable photo to reverse the order.
Step 7: know when the tool is the wrong tool
If the real question concerns identity, paternity, medical genetics, security or legal evidence, a resemblance website is not an appropriate testing method. Use the relevant professional process instead.

- Use two or three good photo sets.
- Keep lighting and angle reasonably comparable.
- Change one variable at a time when experimenting.
- Do not treat the percentage as genetic probability.
- Look for consistency rather than a preferred answer.
