How reliable is an AI face similarity score?
A similarity percentage can be useful for comparing visible facial appearance, but it should not be interpreted as a probability that two people are related or the same person.
What the score actually represents
The score summarizes how similar two facial representations appear to the model under the conditions of the uploaded photos. It is influenced both by the people being compared and by image quality.
What the score does not prove
A high score does not prove biological relationship, and a low score does not disprove it. Genetics, age, expression, inherited traits and image conditions make real-world resemblance more complicated than one percentage.
Why scores can change
Using a different photo changes the visual information available to the model. Lighting, pose, camera lens, crop, resolution and facial expression can all affect the generated representation and therefore the final comparison.
Family resemblance is especially complex
A child may inherit different visible traits from each parent. The eyes may resemble one parent while the mouth, face shape or other characteristics resemble the other. A single overall score compresses many visual patterns into one easy-to-read number.
Normal and strict modes
If a comparison tool offers more than one scoring mode, the same pair of images may receive different percentages because the scoring thresholds or interpretation are different. That does not mean one mode is a scientific truth and the other is wrong.
A good way to interpret a result
Instead of focusing on whether a number is “correct,” ask whether the result remains reasonably similar across several clear photos. Consistency can make the output more interesting, while large variation shows how dependent the estimate is on photo conditions.
